You can call it Saint Johann, St John's or San Giovanni as the Italians do. Nestled near the small village of Ranui in Val di Funes, this tiny church at the foot of the Odle mountains was a wonderful find... especially now as I read it has parking lots and admission. When I visited, it just had a couple cows keeping watch over it. But it is on private land at what looks like a wonderful farm stay. If I went again, I would stay there! Sadly, tourism has found it. So, now there are restrictions, fences and all the trappings. I spent the night just down the road at a ski lodge and this is the territory where you will find chairlifts in quiet places that will take you up into the mountain resort systems of trails and lifts! The little church was built in 1744. The peak behind it was where Reinhold Messner learned to climb! From this location you are not far from the famous resorts of Val Gardena and Cortina!
